Enjoying the Season

Nov 1, 2023

Autumn is the time for being time outdoors, enjoying temperate weather and fall color, and spending time with loved ones before the hustle of the holiday season begins. As the year is winding down, we love to be intentional with our time and create lasting memories with those we care most about.

Plan Seasonal Activities

As our calendars get busier and busier, it can be challenging to create space for everything and everyone during December, which makes gathering now much more appealing. Apple orchards, pumpkin patches, agritourism farms, hiking, outdoor sporting events, and local craft fairs or festivals are fun options for getting outdoors and enjoying the best that this season has to offer.

Set a Harvest-Inspired Table

Holiday entertaining can be stressful, so by keeping the focus on warmth and authenticity, and you’ll put your guests at ease and your to-do list more manageable. Nostalgic elements like transferware paired with natural elements like rattan will set an autumnal mood. Candle light is always a good idea, and if you choose a floral centerpiece, consider adding dried botanicals, fall leaves, perennials from your garden that have gone to seed, or even an unexpected element like feathers. Keep the menu simple, hearty, and focused on seasonal flavors and it will be a cozy, memorable evening for all.

A few sources to consider:

  • Juliska is a go-to for special pieces to elevate any table (pictured above).
  • Serving pieces inspired by the forms and materials of the natural word from Terrain.
  • North Carolina-based Stick Candles creates beeswax tapers and pillars cast from real sticks and logs in a variety of beautiful shades.
  • Browse Barefoot Contessa’s site for menus and recipes inspired by seasonal produce like apples and butternut squash, or comforting one-pot meals that are sure to leave your guests feeling satisfied.

Host an Outdoor Gathering

While the weather is still temperate in many places, it’s the ideal time for outdoor gatherings. If a full meal is intimidating, invite neighbors for after-dinner cocktails or a casual afternoon gathering. Decorating should be simple and seasonal, so borrow from Mother Nature — a branch leaves (think big!) in an oversized vase makes an easy, impactful statement.

A few ideas:

  • Lighting is important to add ambiance in any space, even outdoors! We love these portable lanterns from Pablo, which not only provide 360-degree illumination, but serve a dual purpose as speakers to add music to your gathering.
  • If you don’t have an outdoor fireplace or built-in fireplace, a portable option like a Solo Stove is a fun addition to any gathering — and as a bonus, they put out much less smoke than conventional open fires. And don’t forget the marshmallows!
  • If you are in a chilly climate, include a soft blanket for each guest, like hese wool and cashmere throws from Garnet Hill.
  • Serve warm beverages like apple cider, hot cocoa, or hot tea to inspire a cozy, relaxed mood.
